When the pump is in running condition, the delivery valve should be gradually opened up to the minimum operating head applicable to the pump type and impeller diameter – the flow should be at least 120% of the rated flow at the test speed.
The pump must be allowed to run in this position for a minimum period of ten minutes.
During this period gland plates should be observed to detect any water slippage through mechanical seals.
Monitoring of the bearing temperature.
Readings pertaining to Head, Discharge, Speed and Power Input at different operating points should be observed and recorded in the test sheet.
Throttle the delivery valve in such a way that a minimum of six observations are made covering the whole working range of pump, either at equal intervals of discharge, allowing five minutes for each observation – please also see clause 12.
After noting down the "Closed Valve" head reading, the pump must be allowed to run at least for five minutes close to the rated duty and the final bearing temperature should be noted.
Before switching off the pump, the following should be checked.
- No leakage through gland plates.
- No leakage through studs and nuts.
- No leakage through gaskets.
- No leakage through Air Cocks and Filling Plugs.
- No leakage through Pressure Gauge connections.
- No leakage through external seal water pipes.
- No heating of stuffing box.
In case of any deviation from the requirements listed in clause h, appropriate remedial measures should be taken and observations repeated.
The gland plate should be checked again for any leakage under static condition.
