The water is pumped out of the Magdalena River - a dirty brown soup which is then treated with alum, allowed to precipitate, filtered and chlorinated. This process was explained to us enthusiastically by the head chemist, who showed us around. I'm afraid I didn't listen very carefully; but I enjoyed simply being near him. He had the aura of a man whose occupation is absolutely honest, beneficial and non-violent. I began to feel very happy and peaceful. It was almost as good as visiting a monastery. |
